A recent study conducted by the Institute Pasteur Dakar focused on Extended-Spectrum b-Lactamase-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL- Ec) in broilers sold in markets in Dakar, Senegal. The research found that 61.7% of broilers carried ESBL- Ec in their cecum, with high resistance to b-lactam antibiotics and frequent multidrug resistance. The study detected ESBL genes in all isolates, with bla [ [CTX-M-1] ] being the most prevalent subgroup. The findings suggest a potential risk of transmission to humans through the food chain, emphasizing the importance of surveillance and intervention strategies to combat antimicrobial resistance.
