Abstrakt: Researchers at the Institute of Medical Microbiology and Hospital Epidemiology in Hannover, Germany, conducted a study on Escherichia coli clinical isolates to investigate the effects of resistance acquisition during anaerobic growth and their sensitivity to butyrate, a metabolite of healthy gut microbiota. The study found that strains with porin malfunctioning displayed altered growth efficiencies, lower membrane stability, and increased sensitivity to butyrate compared to strains carrying carbapenemase. The research provides new insights into the ecological consequences of resistance acquisition and may aid in developing measures to prevent colonization and infection based on the underlying resistance mechanism.
