Researchers at Emory University conducted a study on the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on the risk for internalizing psychiatric disorders in youth at clinical high-risk for psychosis. The study found that higher levels of ACEs predicted a history of depressive disorder, self-harm/suicide attempts, and substance use. Childhood sexual abuse, emotional neglect, and psychological abuse were linked to self-harm/suicide attempts and depressive disorder. The research highlights the importance of investigating mechanisms that may buffer the relationship between ACEs and psychopathology. [Extracted from the article] |
