Researchers at Pontifical Catholic University in Valparaiso, Chile, have identified a novel Lipopolysaccharide binding /bactericidal permeability-increasing protein (Lbp/ Bpi) in the scallop Argopecten purpuratus that plays a crucial role in host resistance to Vibrio infection. The protein, named ApLBP/BPI3, was found to be highly expressed in various tissues and was induced following infection. Silencing the Aplbp/bpi3 transcript resulted in 100% mortality in infected scallop juveniles, highlighting the essential role of this immune effector in the resistance of A. purpuratus. The research was supported by CONICYT FONDECYT and has been peer-reviewed. [Extracted from the article] |
