Gunja SenGupta and Awam Amkpa won the Paul E. Lovejoy Prize for their book, "Sojourners, Sultans, and Slaves: America and the Indian Ocean in the Age of Abolition and Empire." Their research focuses on comparative slavery, nineteenth-century US history, and the connections between slavery in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean worlds. The book challenges traditional historical narratives by exploring the global connections and complexities of slavery, capitalism, and empire. The authors emphasize the importance of historicizing slavery and understanding the diverse forms of bondage that existed in different contexts. Their work highlights the need for scholars to approach slavery from global perspectives, read widely across disciplines, and navigate multinational archives. Gunja and Awam's next project involves exploring a Black Atlantic aesthetic of history-telling and memory reconstruction through film. [Extracted from the article] |
