My older grandson visited over the Thanksgiving break in late November 2023, and he asked me a tough question: "How did you learn to do what you do?" He is a freshman at Brown University, majoring in engineering and design. He has realized that career paths have an element of planning--what major to sign up for; what courses to take--but also a large degree of serendipity. He knows what I have done over a 60-year professional career, but it is not obvious to him (or to me) how and why my career trajectory took the path that it did. How did a farm boy from Southwestern Ohio learn how to stabilize rice prices in Asian countries and even in the world market? [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
