Background By 2030 all nations are expected to reduce newborn mortality rate to less than 12 per 1,000 live births. To meet the Sustainable Development Goal 3.2., Family Participatory Care (FPC) could be a crucial instrument. FPC ensures increased parental involvement in newborn care from birth. Objectives This study was done to understand the effect of family participatory care (FPC) at home, on neonates' (discharged from Special Newborn Care Units) survival in selected districts of Bihar. Methodology A community-based prospective study was conducted using multi-stage random sampling among 1458 neonates delivered in SNCUs of (725) Nalanda and (733 neonates) Vaishali during October 2022 to July 2023. Results Disparity was found among Nalanda & Vaishali districts, in terms of history of loss of children. Nalanda this proportion was around 21.4% while in Vaishali this was 4% only, data analytics revealed that there were lower proportion of newborns' deaths among families who practiced 50% to 80% of FPC in both districts (Nalanda & Vaishali) as compared to families who practiced only 10 to 30 FPC. Conclusion There is an association of FPC with improved survival outcome in sick neonates. FPC practice can reduce neonatal deaths despite the history of loss of children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
