Abstrakt: This study evaluates Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices in India's banking sector. Although recent CSR research highlights various contextual and organizational factors that link CSR to corporate performance, few studies specifically address the extent and nature of CSR activities carried out by banks under CSR Act of 2013. The private banks in India comes under Company Act, it is mandatory to spend minimum two percentage of their average net profits from the preceding three years to CSR activities. Otherwise, the public banks are following the National voluntarily guidelines, 2009, where CSR is voluntarily in nature, it may contribute up to one percentage of their published profits from the previous year. Using longitudinal data from 12 banks between 2014-15 and 2023-24, our findings indicate that public and private banks are actively involved in CSR initiatives. Public banks lead in the number of activities aligned with the CSR Act, while private banks surpass public banks in terms of CSR spending. Additionally, a strong correlation exists between CSR expenditure and net profit. The study further demonstrates that CSR initiatives play a significant role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This study addresses a gap in CSR research by demonstrating that bank's engagement in CSR spending supports underserved sectors of the economy, with CSR investments correlating with net profit and contributing to the creation of intangible assets for the business.
