A recent report from the University of Tras-os-Montes e Alto Douro in Portugal discusses the prognostic value of clinicopathological parameters in neonatal foals with neonatal encephalopathy (NE) and comorbidities. The study found that factors such as recumbency, hypothermia, hypoglycemia, hypercreatinemia, and the development of seizures or comorbidities during hospitalization were associated with higher mortality rates in foals with NE. The research suggests that simple parameters like rectal temperature, hematocrit, blood glucose, and creatinine concentrations at admission may have prognostic value in determining the outcome of foals with NE.
