Two aerogel samples, synthesized using TEOS (Tetraethyl orthosilicate) and Na2SiO3 (Sodium silicate) precursors, were irradiated with a cesium-137 source. Raman spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy was employed to monitor the structural and morphological changes induced by irradiation. The results revealed an increase in the intensity of the Raman peaks following irradiation, particularly the C=C bond peak, which was initially weak but became the most prominent feature after irradiation. Additionally, the peaks appeared slightly closer together after irradiation. These observations suggest that gamma rays may have increased the organic content in the aerogel or caused structural modifications within the silica chains, leading to stronger interatomic bonds. While the FESEM examination of the sample based on TEOS as a precursor showed that there was no change in the distribution of particles or their size, as it remained maintaining its nano porous structure, while for the sample based on Na2SiO3 as a precursor, the results showed that there was a significant change in the size of its particles, while its network remained unchanged.
