Researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on the use of ultrafiltration in cardiac surgery to reduce hemodilution effects and restore electrolyte balance. The study found that modified ultrafiltration (MUF) was associated with fewer intraoperative red cell transfusions compared to controls, while conventional ultrafiltration (CUF) showed no significant difference in transfusions. Additionally, larger volumes of CUF were linked to a higher risk of acute kidney injury. The research suggests that MUF may be more beneficial in reducing the need for intraoperative blood transfusions. [Extracted from the article] |
