A recent study conducted at Children's Hospital Colorado in Aurora, Colorado, focused on the safety and tolerability of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medications in children with Fontan palliation or heart transplants. The study found that ADHD medications can be tolerated with minimal cardiac or somatic growth effects among complex cardiac patients, with no significant differences in growth or cardiac data between medication-treated participants and controls. The preliminary results suggest that treating ADHD with medication could have positive implications for long-term academic and quality of life outcomes for this population, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between pediatricians, psychologists, and cardiologists in individualizing interventions for these children.
