Józef Lustgarten in his memoir of KS Cracovia's 1923 Spanish tour reveals hitherto unknown details of the business dealings of Hans 'Joan' Gamper, a Swiss businessman and founder of FC Barcelona. He also provides insight into 1920s football in Spain where in the absence of a national competition generating sufficient economic resources to sustain a professional team, tours of foreigners such as the Polish one were organized to provide the necessary founding. Three factors from this tour reveal how football turned into mass entertainment and business: the press activity that exceeded mere recounting of events; the construction of greater capacity stadiums that generated higher economic income; and the mergers of local clubs that resulted in competitiveness at the national level.
