Fuel cell technology presents a promising alternative to conventional energy sources, offering safety and high energy density for portable applications. By converting chemical energy into electricity, fuel cells can power electric motors and various electrical systems in modern vehicles. Direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs) are particularly notable for their ability to efficiently convert ethanol into electrical energy, making them suitable for sustainable energy applications. This study focuses on evaluating the performance of a Passive Direct Liquid Ethanol (DLEFC) fuel cell utilizing Nafion 212 membrane. The study aims to assess the feasibility of using ethanol as a fuel for PEM fuel cells and examine the impact of various operating parameters, such as temperature and fuel concentration, on the fuel cell's performance. The experimental setup comprises a single-cell PEM fuel cell with an active area of 25 cm² and a custom-made passive direct liquid fuel supply system designed specifically for ethanol. The fuel cell, constructed using commercially available PEM membrane and carbon-based electrodes, undergoes operation under various conditions, including ethanol concentration and variable torque, to evaluate power output and efficiency. The evaluation process focused on key metrics such as voltage and current outputs across different concentrations of ethanol fuel. The findings suggest that ethanol holds significant potential as a renewable fuel for PEM fuel cells. Further optimization of the operating conditions and fuel supply system has the potential to enhance the performance and efficiency of the fuel cell. This research contributes to the broader understanding of direct ethanol fuel cells and highlights their applicability in the pursuit of efficient, environmentally friendly energy solutions.
