Abstrakt: Natural stone is a pivotal element in shaping local architecture and defining the region’s characteristics. While numerous studies delve into Latvia’s architectural artistry and historical discourse, any comprehensive study summarising the distinctive architectural stones, their utilisation, and the challenges concerning their long-term preservation is still absent. The current study outlines Latvia’s architectural stone heritage, identifying granite, dolostone, and sandstone as the primary stone types used. Source areas of these major lithologies are discussed in the context of local geology as well as historical, political, and social development of the country. The importance of the original treatment of dolostones and sandstones used in finer architectural elements or sculptures is discussed in the context of their susceptibility to degradation, providing laboratory data to illuminate the distinctive characteristics of these two lithologies.
