The article "Global multi-societies endorsement of the MAFLD definition" published in the Annals of Hepatology by Mohamed Alboraie et al. presents an open letter signed by over 80 professional societies from 75 countries endorsing the term metabolic (dysfunction) associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) as an appropriate term for fatty liver diseases associated with metabolic dysregulation. The endorsement is based on evidence supporting the practicality and usefulness of the MAFLD definition for patient awareness and management, with studies showing it achieves an optimal balance between sensitivity and specificity compared to other proposed definitions. The term MAFLD is seen as striking the right balance between lack of stigma and easy communication without medicalizing disease names, aligning well with other diseases across the metabolic dysregulation spectrum and facilitating communication with various stakeholders. The transition to MAFLD is believed to have positive consequences in raising awareness about the condition among patients, healthcare professionals, and health systems worldwide. The article emphasizes the importance of avoiding unjustified abrupt changes in nomenclature and definitions to achieve greater standardization and move towards a more coherent framework for understanding, diagnosing, and treating fatty liver disease.
