Researchers from the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences conducted a retrospective analysis on 23 patients with Struma ovarii (SO), a rare type of ovarian germ cell tumor. The study found that the surgical approach, specifically ovarian cystectomy, was associated with a higher risk of recurrence in malignant SO (MSO) cases. Patients who underwent unilateral or bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy had significantly lower recurrence risks. The research emphasizes the importance of the surgical approach in managing stage I MSO and recommends thorough preoperative discussions for patients considering fertility preservation.
