A recent study conducted by the National Health Service Lothian in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, examined the long-term weight loss outcomes and comorbidity resolution of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB). The study found that both procedures resulted in similar excess weight loss outcomes, but LRYGB led to higher rates of sustained weight loss in the long term. Preoperative weight loss was shown to improve long-term weight loss outcomes. However, the study also noted that while comorbidity resolution was significant, there were high rates of exacerbation of psychiatric illnesses following metabolic and bariatric surgery.
