In the Republic of Bulgaria, two specialized machines have been developed and are used for implementing the soil protection method of vertical mulching with different mulching materials (wheat straw, compost, or farmyard manure) – a modified breaker-dead furrower SHTN-2-140 with a mulch hopper and a device for introducing organic matter into the soil. The former is aggregated with tractors with nominal towing capacity of 30 kN (DT-75М or CLAAS Ares 696) while the latter is aggregated with tractors with nominal towing capacity of 50 kN (John Deere 8230 or Zetor 16245). The effective use of these machine-tractor aggregates requires to conduct a thorough study of their performance with reference to their energy efficiency. Regarding this, the present article analyses the results of this research, proving the appropriate energy -related composition of all four aggregates for vertical mulching, ensuring the optimal towing and speed modes during operation, as well as high operational reliability and a guarantee for the timely performance of the relevant technological operations, performed on carbonate chernozem, slope lands with a slope of up to 5º (8.7%).
