Europeans traveled to the "new world" as early as the 1600s in order to "discover" a new land and begin to gather its resources. Our more recent history does provide a clear picture that what came to be known as North America was already inhabited and not by "savages" but by tribes that lived full lives. One such gathering of indigenous people were five tribes that joined together into a confederacy. The Haudenosaunee Confederacy has a long history as they developed their civic practices, combining five and then six tribes to fulfill their desire to live in peace. For this issue related to Democracy it is critical to understand how the philosophy and government practices of the Confederacy provided the key and essential designs for our fledgling colonial government.
