Researchers at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans conducted a study on the outcomes and management strategies for patients with acute cholecystitis who were treated with percutaneous cholecystostomy tube (PCT) drainage. The study found that PCT removal is favored for patients who recover from acute illness when distal bile flow from the gallbladder is confirmed. Cholecystectomy is reserved for patients who demonstrate persistent cystic duct outflow obstruction. The research, published in The American Surgeon, provides valuable insights into the management of acute cholecystitis in patients unfit for surgery. [Extracted from the article] |
