A study conducted at Louisiana State University explored the effectiveness of total parathyroidectomy without autotransplantation as an alternative treatment for patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism. The research found low recurrence rates of hyperparathyroidism and no severe complications such as pathologic fractures or symptomatic hypocalcemia in patients who underwent this procedure. The study suggests that total parathyroidectomy without autotransplantation may be a viable option for managing secondary hyperparathyroidism in end-stage renal disease patients.
