A custom 3D printed biomechanical dynamic sternal implant was designed based on analysis of chest biomechanics and computed tomography. An optimal design based on finite element calculations of flexible implant elements was developed for manufacturing from Ti-6Al-4V alloy using SLM technology. A prototype of the flexible part of the implant was manufactured for mechanical verification tests on a test device developed for the purpose. Testing showed that this 3D printed implant design satisfies the biomechanics of breathing and is able to withstand long-term cyclic loading. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
