This article provides practice guidelines for qualified surgeons on the use of laparoscopic surgery for various conditions related to colorectal cancer. The guidelines recommend laparoscopic surgery for colon cancer due to its comparable long-term results and superior short-term outcomes compared to open surgery. However, the use of laparoscopic surgery for transverse colon and rectal cancer is still controversial. The guidelines also discuss the applicability of laparoscopic surgery based on disease stage, comorbidities, and age. Overall, laparoscopic surgery is considered safe and effective, but individual patient factors should be carefully considered. The article also mentions the use of laparoscopic surgery for acute appendicitis, diverticula of the large intestine, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, elderly patients, obese patients, and Stage IV colorectal cancer, providing insights into the short-term and long-term outcomes of laparoscopic surgery for these conditions. The article concludes that further research is needed, particularly in the area of robotic surgery for colorectal cancer. [Extracted from the article] |
