A recent study conducted by researchers at Karaganda Medical University in Kazakhstan explored the alterations in the gut microbiome and trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) levels in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). The study found that patients with UC exhibited a significant depletion of certain bacteria and an increase in others compared to healthy individuals. Additionally, TMAO levels were significantly lower in UC patients and decreased with disease severity. These findings suggest that the composition of the gut microbiome changes and TMAO levels decrease in patients with UC at different disease activities. [Extracted from the article] |
