A recent study conducted by the University of California UCSD School of Medicine compared two types of lipid expression procedures for treating dry eye disease. The study used standardized treatment and evaluation methods on patients who received either manual thermoelectric lipid expression (MiBoFlo) or automated lipid expression (Lipiflow) of the Meibomian glands. Both treatments showed improvement in dry eye symptoms and objective findings, but the manual therapy with MiBoFlo resulted in higher improvement scores compared to the automated therapy with Lipiflow. The study also identified negative prognostic factors for symptomatic improvement, such as blepharitis, autoimmune disease, and ocular allergies. [Extracted from the article] |
