A recent study from Superior University provides an update on oncocytomas, a type of benign epithelial tumor that is common in elderly females. The study explains that oncocytomas are caused by mitochondrial and somatic gene mutations, which result in defective oxidative phosphorylation and a decrease in energy production. The study presents a case report of a 60-year-old Pakistani woman who presented with a small, painless swelling in her left eye. The mass was surgically removed and found to be a well-encapsulated tumor composed of tall, columnar cells with abundant cytoplasm. This research provides valuable insights into the characteristics and diagnosis of oncocytomas. [Extracted from the article] |
