A recent report from investigators in Gujarat, India, discusses the use of Bodipys, a type of fluorescent marker, to monitor autophagic lysosomes and lipid droplets in triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells. The researchers synthesized and characterized two Bodipys, BD-1 and BD-2, which were found to preferentially colocalize in lysosomes and lipid droplets. The Bodipys were also shown to induce autophagy and release calcium ions in the cytoplasm. The study concludes that Bodipys have potential as theranostic agents for photodynamic therapy against TNBC.
