A recent study conducted by researchers from State University Campinas in Sao Paulo, Brazil, investigated the effects of consuming the fibrous fraction of Solanum lycocarpum St. Hil. on colitis in rats. The researchers found that despite the traditional use of this plant as a natural anti-inflammatory and its potential to reduce cholesterol levels, consuming the fibrous fraction did not protect the animals against the inflammatory process of colitis. The study also revealed increased oxidative stress and higher levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the experimental model. Further research is needed to explore the effects of different doses and timing of fruta-do-lobo fibers in protecting the intestinal mucosa. [Extracted from the article] |
