Microstructural, defect and magnetic properties of the Mn2FeSi Heusler alloy in the bulk and ribbon forms are presented and compared from the viewpoint of their preparation technologies. The arc melting procedure has resulted in a button-shaped ingot subsequently cut to 500 µm thick discs followed by surface machining. The planar flow casting was employed for production of 25 µm thick and 2 mm wide ribbon studied in its as-prepared state. Despite the difference in the grain size (hundreds of μm for discs and about 10 µm for ribbons), the EDX chemical area analysis has confirmed the same composition of both samples corresponding to the nominal one and the X-ray diffraction resulted in the similar lattice parameters; 0.5684(2) nm and 0.5672(4) nm for the disc- and ribbon-type samples, respectively. At both samples the room-temperature magnetic and Mössbauer measurements have shown a paramagnetic state, while the low- temperature experiments confirmed an antiferromagnetic behaviour below 50 K. Defect-sensitive positron lifetime spectroscopy revealed a high concentration of vacancies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
