"Thailand. Patani through foreign eyes: Sixteenth and seventeenth centuries" is a book edited by Daniel Perret and Jorge Santos Alves that focuses on the old Sultanate of Patani, which is now part of Thailand. The book aims to bring original European texts to an English readership and provide a bibliographic survey of research on Patani since 1839. It includes two essays that explore Patani's interactions with Portuguese Melaka and its spatial features, government organization, and social relations. The book also includes a collection of translated sources, a glossary, and an index. While the book is a valuable resource, it has some limitations, such as ending its time scale in 1642 and lacking East Asian source materials. Overall, it is a commendable contribution to the study of Patani's history. [Extracted from the article] |
