This document discusses the gender disparity in the journal Hernia and its affiliated societies. Despite an increase in the number of female surgeons, there is still a gender gap in authorship and leadership roles within surgical literature and societies. The study found that only a small percentage of first, second, and last authors in Hernia were women, and there has not been a single editorial written by a female first author in the past 20 years. The research also revealed that there is a lack of women in leadership positions in the American Hernia Society and the European Hernia Society. The document suggests various measures that can be taken to address this gender disparity, such as implementing blind peer-review processes, providing resources and opportunities for female surgeons, and promoting mentorship and leadership positions for women.
