The Grumman Avenger, originally introduced as a carrierborne bomber, played a significant role in World War II. Despite a challenging combat debut, nearly 10,000 Avengers were produced and used in major battles in the Pacific Campaign. The aircraft had a range of 1,215 miles and could carry a torpedo or bombs in its internal bomb bay. It was also equipped with various technologies such as rockets, radar, and anti-submarine warfare capabilities. The Avenger remained in service until the 1960s, even being used by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. [Extracted from the article] |
