A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center focused on a case of polycythemia, a condition characterized by an abnormal increase in red blood cells. The study examined a 52-year-old woman who presented with acute digital ischemia and pain in her right hand. The researchers found that the patient had small, tortuous, and aberrant vasculature, leading to upper extremity ischemia. The patient's condition improved with treatment, including intravenous anticoagulation, oral anti-coagulation and anti-platelet therapy, and weekly therapeutic phlebotomy. The study highlights the unique manifestation of polycythemia and its management in this particular case. [Extracted from the article] |
