Abstrakt: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 10% of pregnant women and 13% of postpartum women suffer from mental disorders, particularly depression. In developing countries, these rates are even higher, at 15.6% during pregnancy and 19.8% postpartum. These depression issues often impair the mothers' ability to perform daily functions, highlighting that depression concerns extend beyond the physical to include significant mental health challenges. This observational study, using a prospective cohort design, was conducted in the Sawah Pulo Community Health Center area, Semampir District, Surabaya City, Indonesia. The study population comprised all pregnant women in the district, with a sample of 31 third-trimester pregnant women selected through simple random sampling. The Self Reporting Questionnaire-29 (SRQ-29) was used to detect Emotional and Mental Disorders (EMD) in both pregnant and postpartum women. Participants were interviewed during the third trimester and again up to one month postpartum. The findings revealed that 32.3% of third-trimester pregnant women experienced depression, increasing to 45.2% postpartum. Among those with prenatal depression, 60% continued to experience postpartum depression. In addition, 38.1% of women without depression during pregnancy developed it postpartum. The study suggests that persistent depression from pregnancy into the postpartum period is often due to a lack of informational support from families. However, those receiving consistent family support during pregnancy typically did not continue to experience postpartum depression. Therefore, providing pregnant women with essential information and family support is crucial for ensuring mental well-being during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
