The color of crude palm oil can be reduced by zeolite during the bleaching process. However, the use of activated zeolite with acid in the bleaching process causes corrosion of the production equipment. To overcome this problem, the zeolite surface is modified using Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide, which provides the hydrophobic character on the zeolite surface and is able to adsorb a certain amount of β-carotene in crude palm oil without damaging the oil and production equipment. The zeolite used in this research is mordenite and clinoptiloite from Cikembar-Sukabumi. Zeolite modification by Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide has been carried out, and it was applied to eliminate the β-carotene in the bleaching process using the batch method under the influence of temperature, adsorbent dosage and contact time. In this study, the results showed that β-carotene can be reduced in the bleaching process to 59 %, and the process is affected by temperature and surface properties of the adsorbent.
