Abstrakt: INTRODUCTION: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on surgical training, superimposed on European Working Time Directive rotas, presents a challenge for surgical trainees obtaining their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) to gain sufficient experience to confidently commence consultancy. The aim of this study was to obtain a nationwide snapshot of new-starter National Health Service (NHS) urology consultants' personal experience of the mentoring they received for operative and non-operative aspects of their new job, and whether they would support implementing a formalised national mentorship programme for new-starter urologists. METHODS: New-starter NHS urology consultants were identified via personal networks, social media and the British Association of Urological Surgeons registry. Appointments prior to 2018, those without a CCT and agency locums were excluded. Data were collected by anonymised electronic survey. Respondents provided details on their deanery and certification year, subspecialty interest, fellowship status, whether they had operative and non-operative mentors (and whether this was beneficial), and whether they would support formalising a national mentorship programme for new-starter urologists. RESULTS: A total of 41 respondents were included in the study. Thirty-two per cent and fifty-nine per cent did not have an assigned operative and non-operative mentor respectively. For those who had mentors, this was deemed beneficial by 93% (operative) and 88% (non-operative). Ninety per cent supported implementing a formalised mentorship programme. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings demonstrate that mentorship for new-starter urology consultants was overwhelmingly appreciated and most agree that mentorship should be formalised nationwide to adapt to the evolving status of UK surgical training.
