The article discusses the North Fork Project, which aims to uncover the history of enslaved people in the town of Southold, New York. The project was initiated after the realization that previous historians had focused solely on the European settlers and their descendants, neglecting the stories of other communities. Through research, the project has discovered over 550 enslaved individuals in Southold and Riverhead between 1639 and 1827, with 351 of them being named. The information collected is being shared with other projects and will be uploaded to Enslaved.org. [Extracted from the article] |
