Abstrakt: A recent study conducted by researchers from Weill Cornell Medicine has found that individuals with depression have an expanded frontostriatal salience network in their brain. This expansion was stable over time and unaffected by mood changes. The study also identified connectivity changes in frontostriatal circuits that tracked fluctuations in specific symptoms and predicted future anhedonia symptoms. These findings suggest that there may be a trait-like brain network topology that confers risk for depression and that changes in frontostriatal circuits may play a role in the emergence and remission of depressive symptoms.
