A study conducted by Brown University School of Public Health examined the relationship between substance use preferences and practices and fentanyl exposure among people who use drugs in Rhode Island, USA. The research found that fentanyl presence in urine drug testing varied significantly among participants, with younger, non-Hispanic white individuals who recently injected drugs being more likely to have fentanyl present. The study concluded that harm reduction services and drug checking programs are urgently needed to support people who use drugs in navigating the volatile drug supply.
