Abstrakt: Examines the probability of occurrence of particular fire weather conditions, relationship between fire weather and fire incidence, and estimate the chances of alleviating fire hazard by prescribed fuel reduction burning in Melbourne, Victoria. Processing of daily routine 3 p.m. meteorological data for Melbourne to provide estimates of maximum forest fire danger index; Indication that the number of forest fires in Victoria is related to 3 p.m. forest fire danger index and to the incidence of weekends or public holidays; Value of litter fuel weights that will make bush fires in Melbourne uncontrollable if ignition occurs.
