This article reports the first detection of maize streak virus (MSV) affecting corn in the Philippines. MSV is a serious constraint to corn production in many African and some Asian countries. The virus was detected in four municipalities in Bukidnon and three municipalities in South Cotabato. The isolates from these areas were found to have a close relationship with MSV strains from Zimbabwe and South Africa. Further research is being conducted to characterize the virus isolates and determine the distribution and extent of the disease. The concerned agencies are also providing disease management recommendations to prevent further spread. [Extracted from the article] |
