A letter to the editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association discusses a recent study that found a higher incidence of serious bleeding in patients using diltiazem compared to metoprolol for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. The study also noted a higher proportion of women in the diltiazem group. The authors highlight the importance of considering sex as a biological variable in research, as historical failures to do so have led to a lack of understanding of disease processes in females.
