A letter to the editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association discusses a recent study that found a higher incidence of serious bleeding in patients using diltiazem compared to metoprolol for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. The study also noted a higher proportion of women in the diltiazem group. The authors highlight the importance of considering sex as a biological variable in research, as historical failures to do so have led to a lack of understanding of disease processes in females. They encourage the authors of the study to report outcomes disaggregated by sex, in line with guidelines for sex and gender equity in research. [Extracted from the article] |
