A recent study conducted at Furman University in South Carolina examined the effects of different soft-tissue preparation protocols on muscle characteristics and performance in athletes. The study involved 40 participants, with equal numbers of males and females, who performed static stretching, foam rolling, and percussion massage. The results showed that there were no significant differences among the modalities and that they did not significantly alter muscle characteristics or improve performance. However, there was a significant difference in muscle size and pennation angles between males and females, with males having larger muscles and greater pennation angles. Overall, the study suggests that these soft-tissue modalities do not have a significant impact on muscle response or performance, and the effects are similar for both males and females.
