Abstrakt: A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Nairobi explores alternative strategies for antimicrobial treatment in the face of increasing antimicrobial resistance. The study focuses on Photodynamic Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (PACT), which uses porphyrin-based photosensitizers to target multiple sites and differs from traditional antibiotics. However, the effectiveness of these photosensitizers is limited by their hydrophobic nature and poor tissue penetration. To address these limitations, various delivery strategies, such as attaching the photosensitizers to nanoparticles or encapsulating them in nanostructures, are being explored. The study reviews recent research on improving the delivery of porphyrin-based photosensitizers in PACT. [Extracted from the article]
