A recent study conducted by the University of New Mexico has found that prenatal substance use is common and can have negative effects on both maternal and infant health. The study also revealed that prenatal substance use is associated with mental health comorbidities such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The researchers analyzed health records of 281 patients enrolled in a prenatal program for women with substance use disorders and found that 42% of the sample demonstrated continued substance use. The study concluded that substance use at admission and the number of mental health conditions were independent predictors of continued use, with substance use being the stronger predictor.
