A recent study conducted at Complejo Asistencial Universitario de Leon in Spain has found that Blastocystis hominis, a parasite previously considered to be harmless, may have a high potential for causing acute appendicitis. The study reports the case of a 9-year-old boy who developed peritonitis as a result of acute appendicitis caused by Blastocystis hominis. The researchers emphasize that parasitic infections should be considered as a potential cause of acute appendicitis, even in nonendemic areas, and that certain symptoms such as eosinophilia or elevated acute phase reactants can help in diagnosing the condition.
