A study conducted by researchers at Shandong University in Jinan, China, has explored the use of nanohydrogels in stem cell transplantation for intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) repair. The researchers developed an injectable manganese oxide (MnOx)-functionalized thermosensitive nanohydrogel that protects bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) from damage caused by shear force, mechanical stress, and the reactive oxygen species (ROS)-rich microenvironment in degenerative intervertebral discs. The nanohydrogel not only increases the viability of BMSCs and resident nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs), but also delays IDD progression. This research provides a promising stem cell delivery platform for the treatment of IDD. [Extracted from the article] |
