Norman Rubenis, a sailor and boat owner, decided to convert his Contessa 32 yacht to run on an electric motor. After researching different options, he chose the Thunderstruck kit from the USA, which included a 10kW brushless DC motor and lithium battery banks. Rubenis faced some challenges during the conversion process, including balancing the battery banks and addressing vibration issues. However, he found the system easy to install and was pleased with the performance of the electric motor, despite its limitations in terms of speed and range. Rubenis plans to continue sailing with his electric-powered yacht and has found the experience to be quieter and more enjoyable than using a diesel engine. [Extracted from the article] |
