Abstrakt: Charge transfer or hybridization between transition-metal ions and ligand atoms is the origin of a variety of electronic structures and physical properties of transition-metal compounds, and was a major ingredient of ligand-field multiplet theory initiated and developed by Tanabe and Sugano. In this article, an overview is given how charge transfer or hybridization has been evaluated quantitatively by spectroscopic methods and how it affects the magnetic and transport properties of transition-metal compounds.
